Nobody teaches you how to be a trustee.

Being named trustee usually means a binder you didn't write, accounts you've never seen, family members with questions, and a worry in the back of your mind about getting something wrong. It all arrives right after a death in the family.

You don't need to have it sorted out before you call. You don't even need to know what to ask. Tell Veronica what's happened so far, and she'll help you see the next step.

Who you'll talk to

Veronica, Head Paralegal and Operations

Veronica, Head Paralegal & Operations

Your call is with Veronica, a paralegal with more than twenty years of legal experience. She works with our clients after a death, through probate and trust administration.

Veronica isn't an attorney, so this call isn't legal advice. What she can do is listen, explain how we work and what it costs, and tell you plainly whether a meeting with Darlynn would help.

Questions

What does it cost?

The call is free. A meeting with Darlynn is a separate paid appointment. Veronica will tell you the fee on the call, before you decide anything.

If I hire the firm, who pays?

Usually the trust does. A trustee can generally use trust funds for the reasonable costs of settling the trust, and that includes an attorney. Darlynn will explain how this works for your trust when you meet.

What happens after the call?

That's your decision. Veronica will tell you whether a meeting with Darlynn would be useful. Nothing gets booked unless you want it.

I don't live in California. Can I still book?

Yes, as long as the trust is being handled in California. The call is by phone, so you can take it from anywhere.

Is it too soon to call? Is it too late?

Call when you're ready. Some of the first steps in settling a trust have legal deadlines, so earlier is usually easier. But there's no wrong time to ask.

My family doesn't agree on everything. Can you still help?

Disagreements are common when a trust is being settled, and they don't rule you out. What our team doesn't handle is lawsuits or formally contested trusts. If you're not sure which one this is, book the call and Veronica will tell you.
